Frequentally Asked Questions

What are your fees?
My fees can vary based on factors such as lesson frequency, subject matter, and financial need.
As a general guide:
Online one-to-one sessions:
-
Regular weekly or fortnightly lessons: $60 per hour
-
Casual lessons: $70 per hour
In-person one-to-one sessions:
-
Regular weekly or fortnightly lessons: $60 per hour
-
Casual lessons: $70 per hour
Group lessons (online or in-person):
-
2 students: $80 per hour
-
3 students: $100 per hour
If these fees are out of reach, please get in touch. I aim to provide a “sliding scale” approach, meaning I sometimes lower my fees for lower-income students/parents.

Do you offer a free trial lesson?
I do not offer free trial lessons. However, I am always happy to do an initial one-off lesson at my usual hourly rate for casual students. I never require students to commit to a specific number of lessons, so there is no obligation to book in more than one lesson at a time. However, I do offer discounted fees for regular weekly lessons.

Online Lessons
How are online lessons conducted?
I use an interactive whiteboard via Bitpaper, along with Zoom for audio/video (Alternative video call platforms such as Google Meet or MS Teams also work).

Students do not need to download any software to use the Bitpaper whiteboard, nor do they need to create an account - I simply send students the URL for their Bitpaper whiteboard page. Students can also access their whiteboard at any time, with all content saved between sessions.
The content and structure of online lessons are largely the same as those of in-person lessons. Some of my local students even prefer online lessons, or a mix of in-person and online, because it offers greater scheduling flexibility.

Are any special devices needed, such as an iPad?
While some of my students prefer to use a tablet + pen to write on the whiteboard, a laptop trackpad or mouse typically work just fine.
In-Person Lessons
Where are in-person lessons held?
I currently meet all my in-person students at the Central Christchurch Library, Tūranga, which allows me to schedule back-to-back lessons.
Do you do at-home tuition?
My schedule generally doesn’t allow me to travel to students’ homes. However, for students based in the city centre, this is occasionally an option. Some of my Christchurch students have found they prefer online lessons when they are unable to travel to the city centre.
Do you take group lessons?
Within my private tutoring, I primarily offer one-to-one sessions. I find that such individualised support is the best way for students to get the most out of lessons. Occasionally, if 2 or more students are working at the same level or on the same material (for example, preparing for the same exam), group lessons - either in person or online - can work well.

For students based in Christchurch, I often take in-person classes via Eduexperts (located in Upper Riccarton). While such classes do not provide the same level of individualised support as private 1-1 lessons, they may be a more cost-effective alternative. I currently teach classes focused on preparing students for maths competitions such as the AMC, Otago Problem Solving, APSMO, and Cantamaths, as well as holiday programs to help students gain a head start on the school year.

If you are interested in these classes, you can contact Eduexperts directly via their website to inquire about the classes I am currently taking or to register your interest in taking one with me. If none of my current classes have space or are at a suitable level, I may be able to create a new class if there are enough interested students.
