Maths Competitions

I particularly enjoy working with students who enjoy learning problem-solving techniques and want to attempt maths competitions. Developing problem-solving skills is a great skill for any student, with wide-ranging applications. Training for math competitions is also a great option for students who find their school classes not challenging enough and wish to pursue extension work.

Maths competitions I tutor include:

  • The Australian Maths Competition (AMC) (Years 7-13)

  • Otago Problem Solving (Years 7-8)

  • ICAS

  • APSMO

  • Mathex, Cantamaths, Mathswell

  • NZ Junior Mathematics Competition (Years 9-11)

  • NZ Senior Mathematics Competition (Years 12-13)

  • Auckland Maths Olympiad

I also offer tuition in competition maths for talented Year 6 (or below) students and encourage such students to have a go at competitions aimed at Year 7 and above, such as Otago Problem Solving.

Maths Olympiad

Having gone through the IMO team selection process both as a student and now as the coach of an IMO medal winner, I am familiar with what it takes to make the NZIMO team. My knowledge of the most common methods and tricks that arise in Olympiad problems enables me to steer students towards the best topics to focus on at each stage of their Olympiad journey – whether it’s preparing for NZMO1, NZMO2, camp, team selection, or the IMO itself.

Studying Olympiad-level maths is invaluable for anyone aiming to pursue higher-level study in pure maths or a related field. In New Zealand, IMO team members can typically go straight into postgraduate-level maths papers at university.  For students looking to study overseas, success in Olympiad maths greatly increases their chances of admission to top US and UK universities.  Not to mention, making the IMO team gives students the opportunity to travel the world. During my two years on the NZIMO team, I got to visit the Acropolis in Athens, Disney Land in Los Angeles, and Chichen Itza in Mexico.

I coach students at all stages of the Maths Olympiad programme in New Zealand, including

  • NZ Maths Olympiad:

    • NZMO1

    • NZMO2

  • Camp preparation for both:

    • The January NZMOC Training Camp

    • The Female and Non-Binary Camp

  • Olympiads sat by the NZ training squad:

    • BMO

    • AMO

    • APMO

  • NZ Team selection and training for the European Girls Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)

  • IMO Preparation
